Form Work Diary

How I Made These Images
To create these image I used two different methods. The first method was using a studio and a camera setup that was connected to a studio light and also featured a background. The camera used within this setup was a Nikon D3300 and was set on F/8 to allow for the studio lights light to be captured within the frame. The other method was using my mobile phone similar to previous projects but with different settings such as the flash being activated. By using flash I created shadows and dimension that I wouldn't have been able to create without the flash.

Critical Evaluation
Out of all of the images taken there was a few that I didn't like as they didn't stand out to me as much as the others did when looking at the contact sheet.

The first image is of a petal sitting on a wood surface in an exterior environment. There are many reasons as to why I don't like this image. First of all, the background has a cut in the surface which I believe made it look unprofessional. The subject itself also doesn't standout to me. There isn't much colour within the subject and I also believe that the composition of this image is inferior when compared to the other images taken. This image, I believe, is quite amateur because of the lack of composition and also the lighting within the image.  I feel that this image is uncomfortable to look at.

This second image is of a flower resting on a patterned fabric. The reasons as to why I don't like this image are similar to the other image. the composition isn't perfect and the subject doesn't match the background which makes it uncomfortable to look at. Despite this, I do like the lighting in this image better than the other as I feel as though if conforms to the form subject matter better than the previous image's lighting.

Progress
To edit these images I used Photoshop and a range of tools to alter the colours and the images themselves.

This first image required a lot of editing to put together. I first altered the curves in the original image and then saved that image individually so that when I altered the colours with the hue tool the shadows would be the same and the final image would look as seamless as possible. After saving the first image, I opened it 4 times and altered the hue on 3 of them so that the colours of the lipsticks would be different. After that I placed all 4 of the different images onto one canvas and rotated each image so that the overall image was mirrored in all 4 corners. The main issue with this image is that there is discoloration within the surface on which the lipstick is resting on and takes away form the seamless look of the image.

This image is of a rock  that was captured with my phone in an exterior environment.

To edit this image I copied the image and doubled the canvas' size to fit two images into the image. I rotated both images so that they would be mirrored and once this was done I flattened the image so any further editing would effect the entire image and not just one individual image. After that, I altered the contrast to create more shadows and darkness to add more dimension to the image. This is one of my favorite images because it can be interpreted in many different ways. One person thought it was a brain for example, when it's just simply a rock.

This edit of the wood was very simple. I transferred the colours to black and white to fit the form subject matter further and I also heightened the contrast so that the different shades of black and white were more noticeable.

These next two images were also very simple to edit.

The first image of the flower only used one tool to edit. The contrast tool was used to darken the shadows and to intensify the highlights to add dimension to the overall image.

This final image of the lipstick used a range of tools whilst editing.

The first thing I did was use the spot healing tool to eliminate the blue tac that was used to prop up the lipstick. After that I brightened the saturation so that the background was more white and so that the lipstick was more saturated within the lack and green colours. To finish the image I slightly increased the sharpness to make the image more clear and to make the shadows more intense.
