Line Work Diary

How I made these Images

This particular image is one of my favorite images that I have taken for this subject matter.
I like this image because of the way that it is composed, specifically with the camera angle and the depth of field. The colour is also an aspect of the image that I love.
For this particular image I did not use a camera provided by the college, instead I used my phone as I felt that it was of a higher image quality and was easier to use.
This image uses the Vertical line convention. A vertical line represents power and strength.
Critical Evaluation of the Images
During this photo shoot, my main focus was to capture the lines presented in the environment. These lines were; Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, Curved and Converging. Each of the lines give a different effect on the audience, for example; A vertical line represents power and strength.

Many of my photographs, I believe, were strong and represented the subject matter well. Some on the other hand were not as strong and, in my opinion, failed to meet the subject matter. These two images to the left are the two main images that stood out to me for all the wrong reasons.

The image of the mosaic does in a sense have the subject matter of lines but it doesn't represent them in the desired way. The tiles are all scattered and not neatly organised which I believe was quite harsh on the eyes. The main reason for choosing this image as the worst was, simply, because I don't like it.

The image of the tree trunk I felt failed completely on the subject matter. It is composed well but the subject matter just cannot be identified. I was attempting to convey the curves in the bark but I feel like what I was trying to convey doesn't read to the audience.
Progression

I have chosen to turn this image black and white because I wanted to change the emotions behind the image. The bright blue brings a happy, free vibe to the image. However, I wanted to change the emotion to a somber feeling as I believe the shadows in the slits of the door then have more meaning.

I used Photoshop to edit every image present. To edit this image I first turned the image black and white to change the emotion. I then heightened the shadows to add more darkness to the image. I haven't cropped the image as I believe that the image was well framed perfectly. The lines presented in this image is Vertical.

For this image I also changed the colour to black and white for the exact same reasoning as the previous image.

I experimented by enhancing the colours of the brick and the wooden slates to brighten the image to contrast the emotions in the image above but I felt that the darker emotions presented worked better for this image instead of the happier ones.
The line presented in this image is Curved and also Horizontal.

This image is extremely simple yet also abstract. The bright colours of this image bring a jolly vibe to the image. The single white line is the only thing in this image that would stand out to the audience and is therefore hitting the subject matter perfectly.

During the editing process I decided to rotate the image to portrait and to also flip the image so that the glare of light next to the white line is coming in from the left of the image. The reason for this is that during research in GCSE, I found out that audience read images from the left inwards and it makes the image more comfortable to look at if the light is entering the left of the frame. Finally, I used the spot healing brush to make the blue perfect with no small imperfections. This brought more attention onto the line.

This image shows Converging lines with the engraves in the wood slates. The original image wasn't framed very well and I therefore rotated the image slightly to center the middle line and also cropped the right of the image to make the lines symmetrical. Apart from this, there was no editing performed on the image. The purpose of converging lines is to add depth to the image. I feel like I could has positioned the camera so that the lines were longer and made the image deeper. I will note this mistake for future photo shoots.

This image is the worst of the best. I believe that it does show the Diagonal lines but it also has many distractions, such as the background between the wood. I feel that this image isn't particularly interesting to look at when compared to the other images. To edit this image I adjusted the saturation and intensity of the entire images colour to make the image more interesting and vibrant to audience members. I then enhanced the colour of the wood separately to make the red in the wood stand out.

  1. hi there are some really strong images within your work diary, i like the way you have treated them... you may need to apply theory to the images a little more as motion previously e.g. you have leading lines and the diagonals (leading lines show a sudden change of direction as a zig zag is formed...

the blue image is as you have mentioned really abstract but consider your use of colour and the horizontal line which together could imply peace/tranquility.. ?
