Texture Definition

Texture
Texture refers to the tactile qualities of the physical surface of the object. In other words, how the surface of the work feels when you touch it.
The challenge of seeing and capturing texture is mostly based on one element - light.

This image of the Cats face is a great example of how light and shadows are used to define the texture. The shadows on the fur height light the texture of the fur which in this case would be soft.

Patrice de Villiers
This image by Patrice is a very abstract Textural image. It's a fruit that has been cut in half and stacked upon each other. One side shows a spiky, vicious looking side of the fruit. Then the bottom half shows the inside which is a more delicate side to the fruit. Both textures completely contrast each other and therefore make the image and the fruit more interesting.

Sebastiao Salgado
This image shows a large range of textures using nature. On the outer edges of the frame, there are what seems to be rock formations within the water. There is also a crocodile swimming in the water. Both of these textures are similar as the crocodile blends into the rock formations. Despite this, the rock formation looks more rough where as the animal looks more spiky with it's scales. Furthermore, the water reflects the sky which adds another texture to the image of the clouds reflected.
