Form Straight Images
Form Straight Images
For the Form Subject matter, anything could be photographed and for this reason I have not done a Mind Map for this particular project.

This first image is from the first set of images that were taken in the photography studio. The image is of a lipstick applicator that has a few different patterns over it. I believe that this image is related to form as there are shadows and shading within the image that allow for dimension.

This next image if a rock, I believe, shows form perfectly as there aren't many colours and there are also alot of shadows and different shapes within the rock which add to the dimension and creates shape and form. The light coming in from the background allows for a range of shadows to be cast in front of the rock.

This next image is of a wooden bench that has the natural detailing still within it. When capturing the image, I used flash on the camera to light the majority of the subject whilst also creating shadows around the edges of the image. Furthermore, the darker parts of the wood get highlighted by the light.

This image is very simple. It's of a flower that has been captured also with the flash turned on on the camera. The flower I feel represents form as there are many shadows being created through the randomness of the petals and through also the depth of field of the flower bud in the background and the petals in the foreground.

This final image is of a lipstick. It was photographed in the studio with studio lights. The effect that this this image gives is that of a commercial with the studio lights. Finally, the image links to form with the dimension added through reflections and shadows.

Form Definition
Form -The visible 2D/3D shape or configuration of something
There are many elements of composition that form the building blocks of photography: lines, shape, form, texture, pattern, and the rule of thirds, just to name a few. Each of these elements plays a role in drawing the viewer's eye into the photo.
This image links to form as it clearly shows a shape that forms the image of a tree of some sort.

Pattern Work Diary
How I Made These Images
To create these images I used my iPhone's camera to capture them for a range of reasons. The content of the photos are things and places within the college campus that represent a pattern. In future projects I will use a DSLR Camera however for the time being the camera I am using does the job perfectly being a 12 Megapixel camera.
There were many patterns around that I could've photographed - I tired to capture as many as possible. Through doing this there were bound to be patterns that I either didn't like or were photographed to a lower standard than the others.
The first image is an example of a pattern that I didn't particularly like. I capture it anyway as it does represent a pattern. There are some aspects to the pattern itself that I don't like however. The chair was quite old and therefore has some wear and tear which I believe made the image look of a lower standard to the others.
This next image is an image that I liked but had some faults to it. The framing of the image wasn't as good as it could've been. I tried to fix this during editing but I couldn't as the proportions of the image were uneven and the end result in editing didn't looks symmetrical and neat - which is what I feel like a pattern should be.
In the future, I will take note of the content that I will be capturing to make sure it doesn't make the image look unprofessional. I will also ensure the composition of the images before editing is to an acceptable standard.

This final image is an example of a pattern that doesn't repeat or follow the laws of a pattern. It's a rather abstract pattern instead. The pattern is the repetitive use of the rocks.
To edit this image I simply turned the image black and white and increased the contract to again intensify the shadows. The reason for the colour change is because I feel like the original colours are already bland but didn't create as much of an effect on the audience as the black and white version does. I tried to contrast the original image without turning it black and white, however, the shadows were not as intense.
Critical Evaluation

Progress
This image is my favourite of all the patterns. The reason for this is because of a range of things. For example: the image's composition is perfect. It's framed and focused perfectly. The content of the image also shows a repetitive pattern and also has a few imperfections, such as pieces of paper, open windows and some blinds slightly open, to break up the pattern which makes the image more interesting to look at.
To edit this image I decided to change the colour scheme to black and white as I felt like the colour was a distraction to the overall pattern. This was because the panels on the two upper levels didn't have the same colour scheme as the bottom. I further increased the contrast of the black and white to create more shadows and dimension to the image.

This next image is another of my favourites. It's of another student's artwork. The top of the image didn't follow the pattern because of the way the roses are painted. I cropped these out during editing.
To further edit the image I adjusted the Saturation of the overall image to make the roses more vibrant and saturated. This allows for the image to standout to the audience.

This next image is of a mossy bricked floor.
To edit this image I simple cropped out the top of the image and adjusted the contrast by increasing the contrast of colours.
I felt like this image didn't need any further editing.

This next image is very abstract. it's simply of a closed blind with light shining through the cracks. This is another one of my favourite images because of the gradient created on the different panels of the blind.
Whilst editing this image I changed the colours to black and white and, like the other images, increased the contrast. Increasing the contrast creates a dark effect and highlights the shadows and highlights of the image.

Pattern Straight Images
This is my favourite image that was taken for the subject matter of pattern. The reason for this is because of the continuous pattern forming. The pattern is broken up by a few pieces of paper stuck to the windows which makes the image more interesting to look at. The image is well composed as the image is framed perfectly and the image is in focus.
This image shows a piece of art, which consists of 12 roses, created by other students. This image shows a continuous pattern of the reoccurring roses. This pattern isn't perfect because of the top three being painted out of line with the others. When editing, I will crop out the top three roses so that the pattern is continuous and perfect. This image is mainly composed well. There a few small trimmings of the wall on the edges of the frame but these will get cropped out of the final image. And finally, the image is in focus.
This third image is of a mossy bricked floor. The pattern in this image is a continuous pattern. I believe that this image is well composed due to the framing of the image and the image being in focus. There are many things that I will do to this image when editing. Such as: correcting the colour and experimenting with the light levels.
This next image is a very abstract, continuous pattern of blinds. As this image was taken during the daylight, the lighting coming into the blinds create shadows - these shadows slowly increase in density as you look down on the image. This creates an effect of depth to the audience. This image is well composed as it is in perfect focus and is also framed perfectly without the use of editing.
This final image is an abstract pattern as nothing in the pattern is continuous, but follows it's own pattern which is unique to the way the stones were placed. This image is well composed due to the focus and the framing. As this was an abstract pattern, the framing didn't have to be perfect as wherever I took the image the framing would be perfect.
Pattern Definition
Pattern
Pattern is an underlying structure that organises surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner.
Pattern can be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, but it can also be thought of as the "skeleton" that organises the parts of a composition.
This image suits the pattern definition as there are a lot of the same coloured tomatoes to create a pattern. This pattern is not symmetrical. There is also a single red tomato which is out of place. This makes the image more visually appealing.

Texture Work Diary
How I Made These Images
For this project we had to find a range of textures and photograph them in different light levels to portray a range of effects within the textures. For these image I have used my phone's camera as I felt like their performance was superior to the camera's provided to us. In certain images, when capturing the image, I changed the focus of the camera to focus a particular part of the image and to blur the other. This is relevant for the last image.
This image is one of my favourite images for a range of reasons. I like the use of light to portray different textures within the image. I also like the connotations that can be made through the colour of the image and of the image itself.
Critical Evaluation
Despite the success in most of my images, I believe that there are a few that don't portray texture as well as the others.
These two images don't stand out to me when I'm looking at my contact sheets for texture. Both of the images show texture but only one. Rough and Smooth.
The first image doesn't stand out to me as it's just a plain pastel colour with nothing in the frame to break apart the colour. This is my most disliked image of the bunch. There is also no visible light
to change the perspective of the image.
The second image is interesting to look at as there is a few different things which break the block colour. There is a lot of light tin this image - However: as it's a reflective material, there are harsh reflections of the light and I believe this makes the image look unprofessional.
Progress

This first image isn't my favourite out of the top 5 images. However, I feel like it's an excellent example of texture photography.
To edit this image I used Photoshop and used a range of different tools to intensify colour and lighting. I used the Saturation tool to bring more vibrancy to the blue to make the texture seem more soft. I also used the Contrast tool to contrast the colours and to create a darker shadow within the hair to give more of an illusion of a soft texture. Next, I used the curves tool to adjust the light slightly to make the light at the top of the image less intense and to make the bottom of the image softer. Finally, I increased the sharpness of the image to make the textures more noticeable.

This is my favourite image out of the Top 5. There is no particular reason, this image just stands out to me.
To edit this image I used a range of tools and techniques. I started by flipping the image 180 degrees so that the light enters the frame from a different side and direction. By doing this, I've made the image more comfortable to look at. Next I changed the image black and white ad I felt that the colour was too distracting. As the black and white transfer wasn't enough, I proceeded to heighten the contrast and and to darken the lighting to create more shadows on the textures. I experimented with adjusting the sharpness but when I did, it made the image look fake gave the effect of white noise.

This image is my least favourite our of the top 5. It is however another great example of texture.
To start I cropped out the background that was showing through in the corners of the frame to make certain that there were no distraction from the leaf and it's textures. I felt like the colours of green were muted and I therefore heightened the saturation levels to make the colour more vibrant. I followed this by brightening the image slightly to make it seem like there was more light in the frame then there actually was.
